Excursions, active leisure

Buffalo Reserve of Kapolnapusta

There are about 80 buffaloes in the Kápolnapuszta reserve between Zalakomár and Balatonmagyaród. In the buffalo reserve, you can learn about the animals' behaviour by walking along a one-and-a-half kilometre trail with resting areas and a lookout point. The reserve plays an important role in the survival of the native buffalo and the preservation of its genetic heritage, and is a popular centre for the presentation of the species, as the tameness of the herd allows direct contact with visitors.

An exhibition on the wildlife of Lake Kis-Balaton, a buffalo history presentation and a walking trail with playful elements, rest areas and viewpoints where visitors can observe the landscape through binoculars.

In the reception building you can buy publications, souvenirs and refreshments.

Fenyvespuszta Petting Zoo

At Fenyvespuszta, most of the animal petting zoos are free to enter if you wish, making it easier to pet or feed them with pet food purchased at the cashier. The farm is located opposite the entrance to Kányavári Island, on the outskirts of Balatonmagyaród.

Lake Balaton: a natural wonder

Lake Balaton used to be an open water bay, which over time became a marshy flood plain. From the last century onwards, much of the water has been continuously drained and then declared a nature reserve. Today it is a bird paradise. It is home to great crested grebes, cormorants, spoonbills, great crested grebes, wheatears, grey and redshanks, wagtails, reed buntings, reed bunting and great crested owls. The water-covered, specially protected interior areas may only be visited with a special permit for professional purposes and with an escort.

However, Kányavári Island is open to all for a cultivated leisure time, with two lookout towers to admire the magnificent beauty of the landscape and learn about the wildlife of Lake Kis-Balaton.

For those who have a fishing licence, fishing is possible on the Újszabar-Zalavár link road and in the immediate vicinity of Kányavári Island.

Little-Balaton House

The Kis-Balaton House is located next to the Zalavár-Zalaszabar connecting road.

It is a presentation of the Kis-Balaton in the closed nature reserve. The aim of the centre was not only to present the natural values of the KBVR and its role in water quality protection, but also to illustrate its historical and ethnographic aspects and to create a cultural centre. The building's location suggests its historicity, as the chapel near the building, the Cyril-Metode memorial column and the archaeological excavations emphasise the memories of the near and distant past.

The Kis-Balaton House, like Kis-Balaton itself, is a "multifunctional" facility. This versatility had to be reflected in the exhibition that was set up here.

Zobori Adventure Zoo

Located on the western shore of Lake Balaton, in Zalaszabar, the adventure park - which can be visited individually, as a family or in groups - offers young people, families, groups of friends, schools and companies who like active recreation and eco-tourism a great opportunity for relaxation and leisure in a peaceful, idyllic environment, in the fresh air - in the spirit of adventure and fun.

Nagykanizsa Boating lake

5 km from the city centre, in the direction of Kaposvár, on the left side of the road, there is the lake Csónakázó, which offers boating and fishing opportunities for hikers. 500 metres from the lake is the lookout, from where you can enjoy the view of the surrounding area and Nagykanizsa.

Keszthely: "The capital of Lake Balaton"

Keszthely is the "Balaton Capital of the Balaton", a town of almost 24,000 inhabitants in Zala County with a lively tourist industry.

It is the most populous and tradition-rich settlement on the shores of Lake Balaton and has a deserved claim to the title of "Capital of Lake Balaton". Its charming townscape, monuments, museums, outstanding cultural events and proximity to Hévíz make it one of the most visited settlements on Lake Balaton.
